The Communist Party of the Soviet Union General-Secretarial election of 1991 was a contest between the incumbent Prime Minister Nikolay Ryzhkov, and the incumbent First Secretary of Oryol Oblast Gennady Zyuganov. Zyuganov was helped by a strong economic recovery from the deep recession. In the national popular vote, Zyuganov received 59.65% to Ryzhkov's 40.35%.
Zyuganov took office that from the election on January 1, 1992 and never hold power.
